You read that right.
What is it about French girl hair that makes American women pay so much attention?
Every other month I seem to see a product or tool to attempt to mimic the “French tousled look.” People love how it looks- like sexy bedhead, relaxed but not frumpy/messy.
Simply put, the French way is the relaxed way.
French girls encourage volume and don’t chase perfection at all. The blow dry is tussled, never round-brushed. I barely see hot tools. The cut is longer and hardly blunt. It can get down-right ragged on the ends!

Tools: None.
I have RARELY seen a French girl own a hairdryer or hot tool. I know! Not even a hairdryer

Products: Shampoo.
Yes. One product. Many French girls don’t even use conditioner.
Don’t believe me? I know. It’s shocking.
French It-Girl Royalty, Caroline de Maigret, DOESN’T OWN A HAIRDRYER + uses CHEAP SHAMPOO + the occasional conditioning mask. More in her interview here.

American Horror Story Story Time from my first stay in France:
I had a minor panic attack because I had been dying my own hair at the time (aka fried into oblivion) and I had left all my deep-conditioning creams at home. (I never pack liquids for long haul flights)
I got to the store and couldn’t find anything similar! Sure there were some pricey ones in the salon windows but I wasn’t in the mood to fork over 40 euros. It took a while to find something I loved because there simply isn’t a market for it.
I admire the look but I have a feeling that this is a too much for a Californian girl to get behind.
With the popularity of Dry Bar, dry shampoo & even basic things like no split ends… I don’t know if California girls can get behind this look.
Don’t get me wrong, a Cali girl loves some Victoria’s Secret style waves. It’s polished but not too uptight.
However, she could easily use 3 tools and 4 products to achieve the desired effect.
The French have bedhead because it’s actually bedhead. This is the appeal. It’s the attitude that goes with the look. The ownership.
The French are masters of LOOKING carefree, not too put together and not trying so hard.
