Pain Perdu, “lost bread,” was born as a way to revive stale bread. What Americans know as simply as French Toast, has been in usage as early as 1660 (Oxford English Dictionary).
Pain Perdu pour deux – French Toast for Two
Ingrédients
Serves 2
3 large eggs
1 cup whole milk
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
4 slices of bread (Any kind! But most prefer brioche or white bread. Cut into 3/4″ slices)
1 tablespoon butter, may need more later
*Toppings of your choice, see below*
1. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, milk, 1/4 teaspoon salt, sugar, ground cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Using a wire whisk or a fork, beat together well.
2. Place a large skillet over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter.
3. Soak the bread slices in egg mixture for about 4 minutes. This can be done all at once, or one at a time if the bowl is too small.
4. Add the soaked bread slices and cook until golden brown on both sides. About 2-3 minutes per side. Add butter as needed to keep the skillet greased.
5. Add additional toppings as you wish! Here are some common examples…
– Bananas & Pecans (My dad’s favorite!)
– Jus citron & Sucre, “Lemon Juice & Powdered Sugar”
– Mixed Berries & Powdered Sugar
– Maple Syrup (Classic American)
– Confiture, “Jam”
-Nutella (& banana)
